2022-23 New Chapter President’s Letter

Friends and Family of PFLAG Norman,

Thank you for your support in the 2021-22 fiscal year. We are excited to continue our mission of advocacy, education, and support. In the last two years, we have been able to adjust and create a new sense of normalcy in our chapter. Every year we have had challenges that arise in our city against the LGBTQIA2S+ community, children, and allies. We have also experienced an uprising of support and love of our citizens, which has been expressed through humble donations at our outreach events, and the events we were graciously invited to.

Our monthly meetings in person have increased in numbers, bringing a gambit of diverse people, social and economic status, as well as a beautiful variety of ages. This has given us the opportunity to explore more options to accommodate the amount of people and keep providing LGBTQ+ support. We have kept the option of meeting through ZOOM, and this has helped us reach people outside the boundaries of our city.

Saying all of this, it is because of you and your support that we have been able to keep growing, advocating, educating, and supporting. This month we are requesting you to renew your membership if you have not already. If you have not become a member yet, please join us. Together, we will continue to carry on the mission for the Norman community.

Here are a few of our accomplishments this year:

  • Advocacy – It has been a very busy and productive time. We have participated in over 11 events in this cycle, in the city and around. From Pride Parades to local events, promoting love, education and of course support.

  • Education – We started to have special guests come every other month to provide valuable information  to our members, and give them the opportunity to ask questions. We’ve had professionals, advocates and allies, such as Bridges of Norman, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma, the Health Department of Oklahoma, and Norman’s Diversity and Equity office.

  • Support – Our monthly one-hour support meetings have been growing in numbers and in unity. We have been noticing that after the hour is up, people want to continue the support group, creating a stronger bond in the community. We have also noticed an increase in traffic on our support line. It feels amazing to help as much as we can to those who come to our meetings, call, or email us.

  • Other Notes – After many years of using our iconic rainbow float, we decided to retire it and built a new one that reflects our PFLAG community. It has become a staple of PFLAG Norman and a positive response from people. Selfies included! It also won the Most Colorful Float at Norman Pride.

  • Scholarship – Lastly, thanks to your contributions we were able to offer a $3,000 scholarship to Cora Bosse. Cora has proven her dedication and advocacy for equality in the community and plans to pursue an education in…

Please help us continue to make a difference for the rest of 2022 and 2023. Click HERE to join, renew, and donate. We are grateful for your generosity and commitment towards our mission of advocacy, education and support.
